Nepal Requests Ukraine to Release Captive Nationals in Bilateral Meeting

During a meeting in New Delhi, Nepal urged Ukraine to release seven Nepali nationals imprisoned as war captives. Minister Deuba asserted that Nepal prohibits recruitment of its citizens into foreign militaries. Ukraine pledged to follow legal processes for their release and discussed support for Nepal’s UN candidacy, alongside a visa-free agreement for diplomatic passports.
In a recent bilateral meeting in New Delhi, Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, urged Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sibiga, to expedite the release of seven Nepali nationals who are being held as prisoners of war. This meeting took place during the Raisina Dialogue, which was organized by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Deuba emphasized that Nepal does not endorse recruitment of its citizens into the Russian military. The seven youths were purportedly lured into the Russian army with false promises, only to be subsequently captured by Ukrainian forces. Minister Sibiga committed to adhering to legal procedures to facilitate the release of the detained nationals.
Furthermore, Foreign Minister Deuba requested Ukraine’s support for Nepal’s candidacy for a term on the UN Human Rights Council from 2027 to 2029. In a significant development, the two countries also formalized an agreement allowing visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and official passports.
