Peru’s President Advocates Business Investment to Combat Crime

President Dina Boluarte has encouraged Peru’s business leaders to join forces against crime by investing in a portfolio of 47 projects worth S/1.6 billion. The projects focus on improving prison facilities, security systems, and police infrastructure as part of a broader initiative to strengthen public safety and combat delinquency in the country.

On Tuesday, President Dina Boluarte urged Peru’s business sector to unite against crime and delinquency by investing in 47 initiatives within the “Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security” portfolio, totaling S/1.6 billion (approximately US$439 million). She emphasized the importance of business leaders acting as a unified front against these issues.

Among the proposed projects are the construction of new prisons in the Cusco region, enhancements to Challapalca Prison in Tacna, modernization of infrastructure at Lurigancho Prison in Lima, and upgrades to the security systems in strategic facilities. Additionally, she mentioned the construction of police stations in high-risk areas, the acquisition of essential technological tools for investigations, and the implementation of video surveillance and patrol systems.

President Boluarte stated, “Everything contributes to building a safer Peru; besides, the public and private sectors can and must come together to achieve it. This is not the first time we have done so; since December 7, 2022, we have walked this path together, and the results are there.”

These projects are under the Works for Taxes framework, ensuring transparency while advancing efforts against criminal activities. The President highlighted significant achievements against gangs and criminal organizations since the government’s inception, citing their transfer to Challapalca Prison as a pivotal action in the fight against crime.

She announced the launch of the Alliance for Security, aiming to consolidate efforts for safety, noting the necessity of collective action against criminal enterprises. Moreover, she asserted that the outcomes achieved under her leadership currently exceed those of her predecessors, intending to reveal these results soon.

Additionally, President Boluarte emphasized that societal violence and blockades are ineffective for instigating change in Peru and called for continued progress in enhancing investment confidence. She reiterated her stance on considering the death penalty for murderers, encouraging serious discussions within the political community regarding this approach.

The presentation of the Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security projects portfolio was held at the Government Palace in Lima, attended by various State ministers and business leaders, marking a significant step towards increased collaboration for public safety.
