Ukrainian forces have destroyed three North Korean howitzers in the Kursk region, utilizing drone operations. This action demonstrates the active engagement of Ukrainian artillery in the Russo-Ukrainian war and highlights the capabilities of the North Korean M1978 Koksan howitzer, which has been utilized by Russian forces amid significant losses.

In a recent development, Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed three North Korean howitzers located in the Kursk region. This information was provided by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command and reported by Ukrinform. The artillery systems had been provided to the Russian army by North Korea and were camouflaged within a forest for concealment. To offer further protection against FPV drones, the Russian forces implemented what are referred to as ‘grills’.

The discovery and subsequent destruction of these self-propelled howitzers were achieved by drone operators, who observed the use of high-explosive and cluster warheads from Ukrainian rocket artillery. This marks the second confirmed strike on the Koksan artillery systems during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The first destruction occurred in Luhansk region by operators from the 412th NEMESIS Regiment just a month prior.

The M1978 Koksan howitzer, recognized as North Korea’s longest-range artillery system, is armed with a 170-mm gun capable of reaching targets up to 60 km away. When initially designed, the howitzer’s main goal was to enable striking key locations, such as Seoul, from the north side of the demilitarized zone. The Russian Armed Forces have incorporated this system into their current military efforts against Ukraine, as they seek to mitigate significant artillery losses.

Ukrinform further noted that as of March 18, a total of 76 combat encounters had occurred between Ukrainian defenders and Russian military forces. The clashes continue across six fronts, with heightened activity observed particularly in the Kursk region, underscoring the ongoing intensity of the conflict.

The report from the Unmanned Systems Forces indicates that Ukrainian forces have effectively neutralized three North Korean howitzers in the Kursk region, emphasizing the ongoing efficacy of drone operations in combat. This incident highlights the critical role of advanced technology in modern warfare and the adjustments being made by both Ukrainian and Russian military strategies amidst the ongoing conflict.
