The UPDF cautions the NUP against militant posturing, highlighting concerns over divisive politics and violence. Colonel Magezi emphasizes the volatile nature of the Great Lakes region and Uganda’s role in preventing armed groups from gaining influence. The UPDF monitors NUP closely, asserting readiness to counter any threats following NUP’s militarized displays.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), represented by Acting spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi, has issued a warning to the National Unity Platform (NUP) regarding its increasingly militant and aggressive approach. Colonel Magezi condemned the opposition party for engaging in divisive politics and inciting violence, labeling these actions as reckless and misguided.

Colonel Magezi emphasized that the recent behavior of NUP, which includes hate speech and incitement to violence, could lead to significant consequences. He urged the party to reconsider this incendiary path for the benefit of national stability.

Highlighting the geopolitical context, Colonel Magezi noted the volatile nature of the Great Lakes region, particularly amidst ongoing conflicts in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and tensions in South Sudan. He remarked that Uganda serves as a crucial frontline state, working to mitigate the influence of various armed groups seeking power in the area.

The Colonel stated, “The Great Lakes is one of the most volatile regions in the world, with hundreds of armed violent pseudo-political organisations clamouring for power and influence. Uganda acts as a key frontline state to keep many of these violent groups at bay, some of which are terrorist in nature.”

Further, he reassured the public of the UPDF’s commitment to national security, stating that the army, along with sister security services, is closely monitoring NUP’s developments. He affirmed that they would take appropriate action if necessary. Recently, NUP conducted a ‘foot-soldiers parade’ during which their supporters donned military-style uniforms, an action the party claims is intended to instill discipline among its ranks.

The UPDF’s warning to the NUP underscores the concern over increasingly militant political posturing that could destabilize Uganda. As tensions rise in the Great Lakes region, the UPDF remains vigilant and committed to maintaining peace, emphasizing its readiness to respond to any potential threats. The actions of NUP and their implications for national security are under careful scrutiny.
