Violence in Sudan: At Least Seven Killed in Omdurman Attack

In Omdurman, Sudan, at least seven civilians were killed, and 43 were injured, including many children, following artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The assault occurred during a gathering for prayers and targeted a populated neighborhood. The ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with numerous deaths and displacements since April 2023.
In a tragic incident in Omdurman, Sudan, at least seven civilians, including two children, have been killed due to artillery shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The state government reported that the attack occurred on a Sunday, when families were gathered outdoors for volunteer prayers, causing injuries to 43 people, 18 of whom were children aged four to twelve.
The artillery bombardment targeted the Karari locality, a densely populated area in Omdurman, where children were reportedly playing football at the time. Many of the injured sustained serious limb injuries from shrapnel, with some requiring amputations and others facing severe head injuries that necessitated treatments unavailable at the local hospital, as confirmed by a paramedic at Al-Nao Hospital.
To date, the RSF has not issued any statement regarding this incident. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have accused the RSF of repeated bombings in the Karari locality, which not only houses civilians but also several military installations, including the strategically important Wadi Seidna military base.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been suffering from conflict between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in a staggering loss of life, with reports indicating at least 29,683 fatalities. The unrest has also led to the displacement of over 15 million individuals, both internally and externally, according to data from the International Organization for Migration as referenced by the United Nations.
The artillery attack in Omdurman highlights the ongoing violence in Sudan’s conflict, resulting in civilian casualties, specifically children. The disturbing trend of such attacks points to both the humanitarian crisis and the escalating tensions between the SAF and RSF. With thousands of lives lost and millions displaced, the need for resolution and aid is more pressing than ever.
