AU Chairperson Welcomes Outcomes of Doha Meeting Between DRC and Rwanda Leaders

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, commended the outcomes of a trilateral meeting held in Doha between the leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire and emphasized the importance of dialogue. The African Union pledged support for regional peace efforts and urged stakeholders to maintain the momentum from Doha.

On March 19, 2025, H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed his approval of the trilateral meeting that occurred in Doha on March 18, 2025. This meeting, hosted by Qatar, included President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and was facilitated by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The Chairperson praised the leaders for their dedication to dialogue and the peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis in Eastern DRC. He lauded their recognition that achieving peace, security, and stability is essential for the prosperity of their nations and the broader Great Lakes region. Furthermore, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, consistent with agreements made during the East African Community and Southern African Development Community summit on February 8, 2025.

The African Union remains steadfast in its commitment to African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges, as demonstrated through the Luanda and Nairobi processes. The discussions in Doha were characterized by constructive engagement, complementing ongoing regional efforts. Continued collaboration between the African Union, regional economic communities, and international partners is deemed crucial for fostering long-lasting peace.

H.E. Youssouf conveyed gratitude to Qatar for its role in facilitating dialogue and building trust. The African Union urges all parties to sustain the positive momentum initiated in Doha and to collaboratively work towards executing the agreed commitments. The AUC stands prepared to support these initiatives, aligning with its mission to enhance peace, security, and stability throughout Africa.
