During his visit to Kenya, Dutch King Willem-Alexander highlighted human rights concerns amid increasing reports of abuses. During a recent state visit to Kenya, Dutch King Willem-Alexander emphasized the importance of human rights, particularly concerning the Kenyan populace amid rising allegations of abuses. “The people of Kenya, like those of The Netherlands, want their rights as free citizens to be respected and their voices to be heard,” he stated in Nairobi. He expressed his intent to address these crucial issues during his visit.
In addition to his remarks on human rights, King Willem-Alexander noted the significance of the robust and mature relationship between the Netherlands and Kenya, which facilitates discussion on important matters such as governance and accountability. The visit sparked controversy as over 20,000 Kenyans petitioned the Dutch monarchy on Change.org to reconsider their trip. The Dutch government reported receiving more than 300 emails requesting the cancellation of the state visit, yet plans proceeded as scheduled. The royal couple arrived in Kenya for a three-day engagement and were welcomed with a 21-gun salute and an honor guard inspection.
Kenya has faced criticism for its treatment of dissenters, particularly after the protests in June 2024 against new tax legislation, which saw demonstrators clash with government forces. The situation was exacerbated by reports of state-linked abductions of individuals based on social media content critical of the President. Furthermore, scores of peaceful protesters were arrested during recent demonstrations against kidnappings and abductions.
Despite these challenges, Kenya was elected to the UN Human Rights Council in October 2024, highlighting its role in addressing human rights within the regional context.
