Ecumenical Pre-COP30 Meeting in Brazil Emphasizes Unity and Action on Climate Crisis

The Ecumenical pre-COP30 meeting commenced with an opening prayer service at the Anglican Cathedral of Brasília, where Bishop Marinez Bassotto highlighted the importance of hope in inspiring faith communities to address climate change. She stated, “This hope is alive, keeps us moving, and compels us to act today… it should awaken in us an awareness of the deep interconnectedness of all creation.”
Representatives from diverse faith communities across Latin America and the Caribbean participated, including denominations such as Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Methodist, as well as Indigenous organizations. These participants engaged in discussions aimed at formulating a “Call to Action,” which will be presented at the COP30 presidency.
A notable focus of the discussions is the climate crisis’s effect on Indigenous communities. Jocabed Solano from Panama remarked on the Indigenous peoples’ longstanding care for the Amazon ecosystem, asserting that the church must support their efforts in protecting their territories. He emphasized the need to recognize their vital contributions to planetary health.
Roman Catholic Bishop Jerry Ruiz from Honduras expressed the significance of unity among different faiths, stating, “Regardless of our religious beliefs, I believe that what unites us is the same spirit… it is the Kingdom of God that unites us in the same goal.”
The event is organized by a coalition that includes the World Council of Churches, ACT Alliance, Christian Aid, and several other notable organizations dedicated to climate justice and sustainability.
