Fiji has been designated as a co-facilitator for the 2026 Climate Change and Oceans Dialogue, as announced by the Government. This forthcoming dialogue will take place under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in collaboration with Brazil and the newly elected COP30 presidency. The nomination is recognized as having received unanimous support from all developing country parties via a selection process at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year.
According to the Government, the facilitation arrangement will proceed on a rotational basis. Brazil will co-facilitate in 2025, with Fiji providing support, followed by Fiji taking its turn in 2026. Carlos Márcio Bicalho Cozendey of Brazil will lead the dialogues in 2025, while Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary for Environment and Climate Change in Fiji, will lead the discussions in 2026. This leadership role underscores Fiji’s commitment to combating climate change and safeguarding ocean health.
In conclusion, Fiji’s nomination as a co-facilitator for the 2026 Climate Change and Oceans Dialogue is a testament to its dedication to addressing critical environmental issues. Collaborating with Brazil and other developing nations, Fiji’s involvement will play a significant role in advancing global climate dialogues and initiatives, particularly in preserving ocean ecosystems.
