Kazakhstan has assumed the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, led by Yerlan Alimbayev. The focus will be on pressing security issues such as nuclear disarmament and artificial intelligence. Eight meetings across Subsidiary Bodies will be held, emphasizing collaboration and consensus for impactful outcomes.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has officially assumed the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, as reported by DKnews.kz. At the plenary session, attended by key figures such as the Director General of the UN Office in Geneva and Conference Secretary General Tatiana Valovaya, Permanent Representative Yerlan Alimbayev expressed Kazakhstan’s commitment to advancing the work of the Conference transparently and inclusively.

Alimbayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s dedication to multilateralism and cooperation in addressing global security challenges. The focus of this year’s Conference will include substantive discussions on critical issues such as nuclear disarmament, prevention of nuclear war, negative security assurances, the arms race in outer space, as well as the implications of artificial intelligence in the military domain and biological security. The initiative proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for the establishment of an International Agency for Biological Safety and Security will also be highlighted.

Throughout Kazakhstan’s presidency, there will be eight meetings of the four Subsidiary Bodies between March and May. Kazakhstan aims to engage with all delegations and stakeholders to foster productive outcomes, emphasizing the importance of compromise and consensus in their discussions.

Kazakhstan has taken on the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, signaling its commitment to global security and cooperation. Under the leadership of Yerlan Alimbayev, significant global security issues will be debated, including nuclear disarmament and biological security.
