Mauritania is on a mission to become a significant contributor to the fresh produce market. Historically, Mauritania has gained recognition for its watermelons, which are among the earliest fresh produce to reach Europe each season. Taffa mentions that “this experience has been fruitful,” leading local players to excel in exporting fresh produce and attracting foreign investment, particularly in the watermelon and melon segments. He believes additional products, such as early vegetables and fruits, can strengthen Mauritania’s market position in the future.

Within its agricultural framework, Mauritania prioritizes horticulture as it is crucial for domestic food security. Taffa further elaborates, “the local market is limited and insufficient to justify investment in horticulture… that’s why exporting is a necessity.” He sees an opportunity for Mauritania to compete globally alongside established players like Morocco and Egypt.

Moreover, Taffa highlights improvements in infrastructure, stating, “the port of Nouakchott is undergoing big-scale work to upgrade it,” complemented by the reclamation of arable land and enhanced irrigation systems. This strategic approach aims to strengthen Mauritania’s presence in global trade fairs such as Fruit Logistica and Fruit Attraction.

To date, investors from countries including Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, France, and Sudan have established fresh produce operations in Mauritania. Taffa affirms, “we are preparing the ground for more growers, ensuring we provide a platform for exporters,” focusing on priority sectors that integrate technology and expertise.
