Mozambique Municipalities Commit to National Development Amid Unrest

ANAMM President João Ferreira emphasized their commitment to “help in the matter of serving everyone better and better” and offered the support of municipalities for the country’s progress.

During a recent meeting with President Daniel Chapo in Maputo, Ferreira, who also serves as the mayor of Chimoio, highlighted the creation of the development company as vital for addressing district-level challenges. This equipment is intended to assist municipalities in managing their responsibilities more effectively.

The socio-political climate in Mozambique has been tense since October, following protests against the election results that favored the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo). This discontent, initially sparked by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, has evolved into ongoing smaller protests throughout the nation, focusing on grievances related to electoral outcomes, the high cost of living, and other social issues.

The consequences of the unrest have been dire, with reports from the electoral monitoring organization Decide stating that at least 327 individuals have lost their lives, including minors, and around 750 individuals have been injured. The government has reported at least 80 confirmed deaths and extensive damage, including the destruction of 1,677 businesses, 177 schools, and 23 healthcare facilities during the protests.
