Tunisian Observatory Critiques Ongoing Detention of Nationals in Libya

The Director of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, Mustafa Abdel Kabir, criticized the detention of over 50 Tunisians in Libya, including minors. He noted Libyan authorities seized vehicles and urged for effective action against the ongoing assaults on Tunisian citizens. The Ministry of Interior of Libya has pledged to combat smuggling, while Tunisia’s measures reflect heightened tensions in cross-border trade.
Mustafa Abdel Kabir, the Director of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, has condemned the ongoing detention of over 50 Tunisians in Libya, including two minors. He disclosed that Libyan authorities have confiscated over 25 vehicles taken into Libya, with detainees currently held in a prison in Tripoli. Abdel Kabir urged both Tunisian and Libyan authorities to effectively address these longstanding issues, highlighting repeated assaults on Tunisian citizens.
He admitted to a collective failure in managing border crossings and emphasized the importance of implementing procedures that facilitate safe travel for individuals. According to Abdel Kabir, it is the ordinary populace who bears the consequences of these inadequacies.
In response to the situation, the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity has affirmed its commitment to combat all forms of smuggling. The ministry has announced plans to enforce deterrent measures designed to bolster public security and protect the national economy.
Previously, Tunisian authorities sentenced a Libyan national to five years in prison for smuggling 150 kilograms of couscous. This incident drew public outrage and resulted in increased detentions of Tunisian fuel smugglers while leading to stricter anti-smuggling measures, which, as reported by Tunisian media, are being labeled as cross-border trade.
The ongoing issue of detained Tunisians in Libya reflects urgent diplomatic and humanitarian concerns. Mustafa Abdel Kabir’s call for effective action underscores the complexities of border management and the significant impact on ordinary citizens. The Government of National Unity’s commitment to combating smuggling presents a critical step in stabilizing relations and improving security. The evolving situation necessitates continued attention from both nations to foster mutual cooperation and address these pressing challenges.
