The WCC announces significant changes in its representation for the Colombia peace process, appointing Jenny Neme Neiva as deputy special envoy and Dr. Humberto Shikiya as senior advisor. Dr. Fernando Enns will also serve as special envoy. These transitions occur amid a humanitarian crisis, underlining an ongoing commitment to achieving sustainable peace.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), alongside organizations such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States, continues its role in the peace dialogue concerning Colombia. This dialogue primarily involves negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP’s Estado Mayor de los Bloques.

Jenny Neme Neiva, affiliated with the Christian Mennonite Church in Colombia, has been appointed as the WCC’s deputy special envoy for the peace dialogue. Being locally situated and well-connected with key stakeholders, she will lead the WCC’s representation in peace discussions, leveraging her significant experience and understanding of the peacebuilding framework in Colombia.

Dr. Humberto Shikiya, who previously served as the WCC’s special envoy, will now assume the role of senior advisor for peacebuilding in Colombia, working closely with Neiva. He emphasized Neiva’s unique qualifications by stating that her background in peace and reconciliation as a woman of faith will serve the peace process well and help integrate gender justice into ongoing social dialogues.

Dr. Fernando Enns will take on the title of special envoy, which will allow for a more integrated approach to the WCC’s peace commitments within its governance structures. Although not residing in Colombia, Enns plans to visit periodically to offer strategic guidance.

This transition aligns with a pressing humanitarian crisis in Catatumbo, highlighting the urgent need for the WCC’s mission. Peter Prove, the director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, stated the organization’s commitment to fostering a just and sustainable peace in Colombia while praying for the success of all involved.

The WCC delegation is scheduled to meet in Colombia from March 17 to 21 to engage with government officials, UN representatives, and partners through the Inter-ecclesial Dialogue for Peace (DiPaz) and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, aiming to advance their collaborative efforts in peacebuilding.

The recent changes within the WCC’s representation reflect a strengthened commitment to peace initiatives in Colombia. With Jenny Neme Neiva’s appointment as deputy special envoy, alongside Dr. Humberto Shikiya’s new role and Dr. Fernando Enns’ strategic involvement, the WCC aims to advance its mission amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges. This restructuring emphasizes the importance of gender justice and local leadership in peace dialogues.
