Eddie Jordan, former Formula One team principal and co-owner of London Irish rugby club, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. Jordan had been battling an aggressive form of bladder and prostate cancer and had previously expressed optimism about his recovery. Unfortunately, it appears the cancer returned with increased severity. He died in South Africa, where he resided for part of the year.
His family released a statement reflecting on his vibrant personality, stating, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence… he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow.”
Stefano Domenicali, F1’s chief executive, expressed sorrow over Jordan’s passing, remarking on his infectious energy and significant role in Formula One’s history. Jordan founded Jordan Grand Prix in 1991, achieving remarkable success, including a memorable one-two finish in the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix with drivers Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher.
Despite fading as a competitive force in the 2000s and selling the team in 2005, Jordan remained an influential figure in motorsport, transitioning to television punditry and podcasting. He recently participated in purchasing the London Irish rugby club. Additionally, Jordan was known for his larger-than-life persona, owning properties in Cape Town, London, and Monaco.
In a tribute, his family noted, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE… He was working until the last, having communicated on St Patrick’s Day, about his ambitions for London Irish Rugby Football Club.” His legacy in motorsport, including fostering the careers of several top drivers, will not be forgotten. Eddie is survived by his wife Marie and four children, and he will be missed by fans and loved ones alike.
