Female Diplomats Commend Ethiopia’s Laws for Women’s Empowerment

Female diplomats have praised Ethiopia for its progressive laws promoting women’s empowerment during the 2025 Safaricom Women First event. Emphasis was placed on women’s education, active participation, and self-belief as essential components for development. Continued government support and addressing challenges women face are vital for fostering success.

On March 18, 2025, representatives from the diplomatic community and United Nations agencies gathered in Addis Ababa to commend Ethiopia for its progressive laws aimed at empowering women. This event coincided with the 2025 Safaricom Women First 5km, celebrating International Women’s Day. The diplomats underscored the need for active inclusion of women in all developmental stages to meet the aspirations for societal growth.

Margaret Atieno, Deputy Representative of UNHCR in Ethiopia, emphasized the significance of women’s education in enabling them to capitalize on available opportunities. Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger, acknowledged the government’s commitment to initiatives focused on enhancing women’s roles in society. She suggested that this not only benefits women but also generates broader positive effects within the community and highlighted the importance of women’s proactive participation in these transformative efforts.

UNICEF’s Deputy Representative in Ethiopia, Mariko Kagoshima, praised governmental efforts aimed at citizen empowerment, urging sustained progress. Kagoshima stressed that women must cultivate self-belief to achieve their goals, as internal confidence combined with external support is crucial for empowerment.

Vanessa Prinz, a diplomat at the German Embassy, noted the Ethiopian government’s initiatives designed to promote and protect women’s rights. She asserted that both self-empowerment and external support form a strong framework for women to succeed, while highlighting that the various challenges women face would receive necessary attention.
