Mozambique and Zambia signed an agreement for electricity interconnection to bolster energy supply within the SADC region. Managed by EDM and ZESCO, the project is expected to cost 411.5 million dollars and includes a 400 kV power transmission line. This initiative aims to enhance trade and generate revenue for Mozambique while establishing a framework for regional energy integration.

On Wednesday, Mozambique and Zambia formalized an agreement to integrate their electricity systems, aiming to enhance electricity supply within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This initiative will be executed by the state-owned electricity entities, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).

The Memorandum of Understanding was executed by António Manda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy for Mozambique, and Makoze Chikote, the Zambian Minister of Energy. The project is expected to have an investment of approximately 411.5 million dollars, targeting an increase in energy supply capacity while bolstering Mozambique’s role in the regional energy market.

According to the agreement, this interconnection project will enable energy exchange and facilitate trade among SADC members, thereby generating additional revenue for Mozambique. The initiative includes a 400 kV power transmission line that will extend roughly 376 kilometers, connecting the Matambo Substation in Mozambique to the Chipata West Substation in Zambia.

At the signing ceremony, Joaquim Ou-chim, Chairperson of EDM, noted that the agreement represents a significant shift from planning to implementation for this long-anticipated project. He emphasized, “In the current global energy scenario, regional cooperation is no longer an option but a necessity.” He highlighted that projects like these are essential for fostering a well-connected and self-sufficient African continent.

The collaboration between Mozambique and Zambia to interconnect their electricity systems is a strategic step toward enhancing energy supply within the SADC region. With significant investment and a focus on energy trade, this project will strengthen Mozambique’s position in the energy market while providing much-needed electricity stability and cooperation across southern Africa.
