Nigeria’s Position in the 2025 World Happiness Rankings

Nigeria has ranked 105th in the 2025 World Happiness Report, down from 102 in 2024, becoming the 10th happiest country in Africa. Finland remains the world’s happiest nation. The report highlights disparities in happiness, focusing on factors such as social support and perceptions of corruption.
On March 20, the International Day of Happiness, the 2025 World Happiness Report revealed that Nigeria has dropped to the 105th position out of 147 nations. This represents a decline from its 2024 ranking of 102, although Nigeria is now ranked as the 10th happiest country in Africa.
In Africa, Libya ranks highest, holding the 79th position globally, indicating a relatively higher level of life satisfaction amid ongoing challenges. Finland continues to be recognized as the happiest country worldwide for the eighth consecutive year, followed by other Nordic countries such as Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden.
The Netherlands, Israel, and Luxembourg make up the remaining spots in the top ten, standing at 5th, 8th, and 9th, respectively. Conversely, the United States has fallen to the 24th position and has not been in the top 20 since last year, having previously reached 11th place in 2012. Similarly, the United Kingdom has dropped to 23rd, experiencing its lowest life satisfaction since 2017.
Canada remains in the top 20 despite a downward trend over the past decade, currently ranking 18th. In stark contrast, Afghanistan, grappling with a humanitarian crisis since the Taliban regained control in 2021, occupies the last position at 147, followed by Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Malawi, and Zimbabwe as the lowest-ranked nations in the index.
The World Happiness Report, released annually by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, with collaboration from Gallup and the Oxford Center for Well-Being Research, examines variances in happiness across populations. In this edition, the emphasis is on the significance of caring and sharing in enhancing human happiness, further highlighting the disparities both within and between countries.
