In a letter to Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Siddiq’s legal team demanded a cessation of the allegations, which they describe as “false and damaging.” Despite her presence at a 2013 signing ceremony in the Kremlin with Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Siddiq maintains that she has no ties to the nuclear deal.
Her lawyers emphasized that it is common for family members to attend such state events. Additionally, they refuted claims that a £700,000 flat in King’s Cross, London, is linked to embezzlement, stating it was acquired a decade before any nuclear agreements were made, thus rendering the allegations “absurd.”
Tulip Siddiq’s family history is politically rooted; her father was a professor in Dhaka, and her mother received political asylum in the UK. Siddiq previously served as the UK’s economic secretary to the Treasury before stepping down in January, a post responsible for overseeing corruption.
ACC chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen responded to Siddiq’s claims, asserting that the investigation is based on documented evidence and not targeted. He welcomed her to defend herself, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.
The controversy was sparked by comments from the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh regarding Siddiq’s potential involvement in embezzlement related to the Rooppur project, insinuating that she may face questioning in Bangladesh. These statements have been vehemently denied by Siddiq’s legal team, claiming they are part of a campaign to damage her reputation, rather than a legitimate investigation.
According to her representatives, Siddiq’s wealth in Bangladesh is nonexistent, and no evidence has been provided to substantiate the accusations. The allegations originated from an ACC media note released in February 2025, which claimed $5 billion in irregularities connected to the Rooppur project, implicating Siddiq and other prominent individuals.
