The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recently honoured Ugandan police officers for their contributions to peace in Somalia. This event took place at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu and was attended by AUSSOM Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu, among other senior officials. Commissioner Kanu praised the officers for their resilience and dedication in combating Al-Shabaab and promoting broader peace efforts under the African Union mission.
During the ceremony, AIGP Kanu commended the officers for their unwavering determination despite challenging conditions. “This medal parade is a testament to your resilience, dedication, and sacrifices in the fight against Al-Shabaab and the broader peace-building mission under the African Union mission,” he stated. He emphasized that their bravery has helped restore law and order and strengthen the trust of the Somali people in their security forces.
The Uganda Formed Police Unit (UFPU-12), which was deployed in April 2024 as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), has made significant operational contributions to the Somali Police Force. Kanu acknowledged the UFPU-12 team for their discipline and commitment in the face of considerable operational challenges, highlighting their achievements in various areas including high-risk patrols and community policing initiatives.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Justus Asiimwe, the UFPU-12 Contingent Commander, reflected positively on the collaborative efforts between Ugandan troops and the Nigerian Formed Police Unit. He expressed appreciation for the bonds formed during their service, noting, “We will always cherish the experiences and relationships that we have developed and cultivated. No two groups understand each other better than us and Nigeria.”
AUSSOM’s Formed Police Units also provide support to the Somali Police Force in areas such as VIP escort, security for high-level events, mentorship, and securing government facilities. Additionally, countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone contribute Formed Police Units to AUSSOM to enhance the collective peacekeeping efforts in the region.
The AUSSOM event showcased the significant contributions of the Ugandan police officers to peace and stability in Somalia. Their resilience, bravery, and collaboration with international partners have strengthened both local trust and the overall effectiveness of regional peacekeeping operations. The recognition received highlights the commitment of Uganda and other contributing nations to support Somalia’s journey towards stability and security.
