Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended Wafica Mehdi’s lecture at the IV International Colloquium “Patria” in Havana. The conference addressed media issues related to the Global South, featuring panels on digital strategies and alternative communication. Nearly 500 participants from over 40 countries engaged in discussions about left-wing political communication amid media hegemony challenges.

On March 19, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended a lecture by prominent Lebanese journalist Wafica Mehdi. The lecture, titled “Media lessons of the Palestinian genocide: propaganda, silencing and informative resistance,” was part of the closing sessions of the IV International Colloquium “Patria,” held in Havana.

The conference featured various panels, including “Reprogramming the Net: strategies to mitigate polarization and hate speech in digital environments,” led by journalist José Manzaneda, and “Technologies for emancipation: alternative communication and information sovereignty in the Global South” with Venezuelan Jorge Arreaza and Bolivian Sacha Llorenti.

Experts such as Pascual Serrano, Carlos Penalva, Alina Duarte, and Gabriela Rivadeneira, alongside speakers from Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, India, and Vietnam, engaged in discussions regarding the strategies of the Global South against Western information hegemony. They explored the role of media as political actors and assessed digital consumption in today’s era.

The IV International Colloquium “Patria,” under the theme “We are peoples weaving networks,” attracted nearly 500 participants from over 40 nations, all focused on left-wing political communication amid the challenges posed by the media landscape.
