Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo addressed protests concerning Melissa Atwell’s detention, urging opposition members to direct their grievances towards U.S. immigration policies rather than the Guyanese government. He clarified that the PPP has no influence over ICE decisions and emphasized the legitimacy of protests while redirecting focus to appropriate authorities. Atwell’s upcoming court appearance further underscores the complexities of her situation.

On Thursday, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo urged opposition members to direct their protests towards the U.S. government rather than the Guyanese government in relation to the detention of social media activist Melissa Atwell. He highlighted that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of U.S. authorities, specifically U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and not the administration of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Dr. Jagdeo addressed the recent protests at the Square of the Revolution, where individuals expressed concerns over Atwell’s situation. While affirming the right of all Guyanese citizens to protest, he maintained that the governance issues related to U.S. immigration policies are outside of Guyana’s influence. He stated that those participating in the rally were being misled by information suggesting that the PPP has an influence over U.S. immigration decisions.

The Vice President categorically stated, “We are not going to get sucked into a debate around Ms. Atwell,” and emphasized that the opposition should directly confront U.S. policy if there are grievances. He further clarified that the decisions on Atwell’s status, whether she remains in the U.S. or returns to Guyana, rests solely with U.S. authorities. He noted, “If she stays there, we wish her well. If she comes home, she is welcomed as a Guyanese citizen.”

Dr. Jagdeo also reiterated the government’s inability to control Ms. Atwell’s statements, regardless of her location. He assured that the PPP’s standing remains unchanged regardless of criticism aimed at the party. Discussing U.S. immigration practices, he indicated that ICE detains individuals for immigration reasons, while also commenting on Atwell’s claims of U.S. citizenship, which may complicate her case further.

Notably, Atwell has a scheduled appearance before a U.S. Immigration Judge on March 28 following her transfer to Louisiana after an arrest in New York. This will be her rescheduled court appearance, reflecting the ongoing complexities of her immigration status.

In conclusion, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo urged that protests regarding Melissa Atwell’s detention should be directed towards the U.S. government rather than the Guyanese administration. He emphasized the lack of control that Guyana has over U.S. immigration policies and confirmed that any further decisions about Atwell’s status are solely within U.S. jurisdiction. The situation highlights the complexities surrounding immigration matters and the influence of political narratives.
