Nawaz Sharif has been appointed as the patron-in-chief of the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival to oversee the restoration of colonial-era buildings in Lahore under the government of his daughter, Maryam Nawaz. This move follows criticism and mockery from opposition leaders, highlighting the political context of his new role amid recent electoral defeats.

Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has accepted a new position within the government of his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, in Punjab. Appointed as the patron-in-chief of the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival (LAHR), he will manage the restoration of numerous colonial-era structures across Lahore. This appointment has been officially confirmed by the Punjab administration, which expects him to oversee the preservation efforts in the historic city.

In the wake of this announcement, Imran Khan’s party swiftly ridiculed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), congratulating Nawaz Sharif on his new government role. Senior leader Shaukat Basra from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf remarked that Nawaz had transitioned from a retired life following the 2024 elections to engaging in government tasks assigned by his daughter, stating that such work would benefit Nawaz’s health.

Basra further commented on Nawaz’s return from London in 2023 when he aimed to reclaim the Prime Minister position but was ultimately overlooked in favor of his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, by the military establishment. His words carried a tone of sarcasm, anticipating that Nawaz would now be observed managing the restoration of the historical sites in Lahore.

The Punjab government has designated over 100 buildings as historical heritage sites, and Nawaz Sharif has requested a detailed restoration plan from the Walled City Authority of Lahore. He expressed his commitment to restore the beauty of Old Lahore, emphasizing the importance of preserving the nation’s heritage as a collective responsibility.

Nawaz Sharif’s new role as patron-in-chief of the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival signifies a shift from political ambition to cultural preservation. His appointment, however, has drawn criticism from opposition parties who perceive it as a diminished role following his recent political challenges. As he embarks on this endeavor to restore historical sites in Lahore, the broader implications of his involvement in government during his daughter’s administration remain a subject of political scrutiny.
