Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Sworn In as Namibia’s First Female President

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been inaugurated as Namibia’s first female president. She won 57% of the votes in the last election. A lifelong SWAPO member with a history of activism, Nandi-Ndaitwah promises to strengthen Namibia’s economy and employment sectors. Her success is recognized by fellow leaders, including Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan, who lauded her influence on female leadership.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has achieved a historic milestone by becoming Namibia’s first female president, sworn in during the country’s 35th Independence Day celebration at the State House. Chief Justice Peter Shivute administered the oath of office, with former President Nangolo Mbumba officially transferring power.

At 72 years of age, Nandi-Ndaitwah won last year’s election with a commanding 57% of the vote, overcoming her closest competitor, Panduleni Itula, who has since disputed the election results as fundamentally flawed. A dedicated member of SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party, she began her activism at the age of 14 during the struggle against South African rule. Throughout her distinguished career, she has held various key ministerial positions, including roles in foreign affairs, tourism, child welfare, and information since the country’s independence in 1988.

In her inaugural speech, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized her commitment to strengthening Namibia’s economy, creating new job opportunities, and fostering national unity amid a politically fragmented landscape. She outlined plans to enhance employment prospects in various sectors such as agriculture, fishing, as well as cultural and sporting industries.

Tanzanian President Samia Hassan, who is also a female head of state, praised Nandi-Ndaitwah’s ascent, asserting that she is “setting the bar” for women in positions of leadership.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s swearing-in marks a significant step forward for female leadership in Namibia. Her election reflects a commitment to economic development and unification in the nation. With plans to generate employment across multiple sectors, she aims to bring substantial change to the country, garnering support from both citizens and fellow leaders, particularly women in politics.
