Parliament Approves UPDF Deployment to South Sudan for Peace Enforcement
The Ugandan Parliament approved the UPDF’s deployment to South Sudan at the request of President Salva Kiir, aimed at addressing civil unrest in the region. The Ugandan Parliament has approved the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan amid growing concerns over civil unrest. This decision was endorsed during a parliamentary session, led by Speaker Anita Among, where Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Oboth, articulated the need for military support due to escalating violence in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State.
Oboth emphasized that on March 10, 2025, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir formally requested assistance from President Yoweri Museveni to prevent a looming security crisis. The deployment is grounded in existing agreements such as the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation and the Status of Forces Agreement between Uganda and South Sudan.
President Museveni’s decision to send the UPDF aligns with constitutional mandates and is rooted in themes of patriotism, nationalism, and Pan-African solidarity. Oboth further noted that this action exemplifies the historical and regional bond between the nations, reinforcing Uganda’s commitment to stability in the region.
Moreover, Oboth highlighted the potential adverse implications for Uganda if the security situation deteriorates in South Sudan, including economic, social, and political repercussions. The UPDF’s previous missions have contributed to stabilizing the region, facilitating peace, and protecting lives.
Hon. Gilbert Olanya (FDC, Kilak South County) also supported the motion, urging fellow lawmakers to back the UPDF’s involvement in South Sudan. His remarks reflected the sentiments of constituents from Acholi and West Nile, who view the deployment as vital for maintaining peace and protecting business interests in both countries.
The Ugandan Parliament has officially sanctioned the UPDF’s deployment to South Sudan to address the ongoing civil unrest.
