The Sudanese Armed Forces have regained control of the Republican Palace from the Rapid Support Forces, marking a pivotal point in the struggle for order. In March 2025, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) successfully reclaimed the Republican Palace from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following two days of intense fighting. This victory marks a crucial moment in Sudan’s ongoing struggle for stability after nearly two years of conflict. The capture of the palace, a key symbol of national power, reflects hopes for a return to order amidst devastating humanitarian crises.

The Republican Palace, located along the Blue Nile River, has historical significance as it often embodies the country’s governance. Although it serves as the president’s official residence, military leaders typically prefer SAF headquarters in proximity. The palace was constructed in 2015 as a gift from China to former dictator Omar Al-Bashir, who has left a complicated legacy in Sudan’s political landscape.

The battle for the palace was led by Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, who took over post-revolution from Al-Bashir after a military coup interrupted the transition to civilian rule. Previously, Al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo had collaborated, but their partnership deteriorated, leading to war in Khartoum beginning in April 2023. The RSF swiftly seized critical locations, including the palace, effectively displacing millions.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a profound humanitarian crisis, with escalating violence naming Khartoum as one of the most dangerous environments globally. Reports indicate that around 61,000 civilians have perished due to the violence, hunger, and disease. Both the SAF and RSF have faced accusations of war crimes and other atrocities.
