Efforts to Facilitate Political Dialogue in South Sudan at Sant’Egidio

The Community of Sant’Egidio hosted a meeting from March 19-20 with South Sudanese opposition representatives and IGAD to discuss political dialogue with the South Sudanese government. This comes amidst a severe political crisis marked by armed clashes. The meeting allowed the opposition to express readiness for dialogue without preconditions.

On March 19 and 20, representatives from the South Sudanese opposition, known as SSOMA, convened with IGAD, the regional organization of Horn of Africa countries, at Sant’Egidio. Their discussions, facilitated by the Community of Sant’Egidio, aimed to outline the forthcoming steps necessary for political dialogue with the South Sudanese government.

South Sudan is currently experiencing a significant political crisis, characterized by armed conflicts between the major parties within the national unity government.
