The deteriorating security situation in Mali has severely impacted border regions, particularly in Tombouctou and Ségou, with 97% and 73% of localities affected by violence or insecurity. Flooding and rising market prices further exacerbate the crisis, leading to significant population displacement within these areas. Immediate actions are necessary to alleviate the humanitarian impact on local communities.

The security situation in Mali has severely impacted bordering regions including Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea. A recent assessment by REACH’s Humanitarian Situation Monitoring highlights that, from July to October 2024, 97 percent of localities assessed in Tombouctou and 73 percent in Ségou experienced significant shocks due to insecurity, violence, or looting. Notably, all surveyed localities in Goundam and Gourma-Rharous were affected, alongside 97 percent in Niafunké, near the Mauritania border.

The study indicated other major shocks such as flooding, which impacted 72 percent of localities in Tombouctou and 62 percent in Ségou, alongside a sudden rise in basic market prices, affecting 58 percent of locations in Tombouctou and 43 percent in Ségou. These factors have contributed to an increasingly precarious living situation for communities in these border regions.

Moreover, the assessment reported considerable displacement, with key informants stating that 34 percent of localities in Tombouctou and 23 percent in Ségou experienced people fleeing their homes due to the deteriorating conditions. While most displacement occurred internally within the region, in some Ségou localities, over 50 percent of the local population was forced to leave, reflecting a dire humanitarian crisis.

The deteriorating security situation in Mali has profoundly affected border regions with significant humanitarian repercussions. The assessments indicate that a vast majority of localities in Tombouctou and Ségou have suffered from violence, looting, and natural disasters, leading to displacement and economic challenges. Immediate attention is required to address these crises and provide support to affected populations.
