Sudan’s military has retaken key buildings in central Khartoum from the RSF, including the presidential palace, Central Bank, and state intelligence headquarters. Despite these advances, the country remains divided, with the army controlling the east and north while RSF maintains dominance in Darfur. Civilian casualties have been reported amidst ongoing battles.

On Saturday, Sudan’s military authorities announced the successful seizure of several strategic locations in central Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army’s chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, proclaimed a commitment to achieving “full liberation” after the military’s regained control of the presidential palace.

A military spokesperson, Nabil Abdallah, indicated that the army was intensifying its efforts against the RSF across the city center. Key buildings such as the Central Bank, state intelligence headquarters, and the Sudan National Museum have been highlighted as part of the military’s recent gains.

Despite these gains in Khartoum, the situation in Sudan remains fragmented, with the military exerting control over the eastern and northern regions, while the RSF dominates much of Darfur and parts of southern Sudan. Activists reported that numerous civilians suffered fatalities in a paramilitary assault in the remote area of North Darfur, far removed from the capital.

In the aftermath of the outbreak of fighting in April 2023, numerous national institutions in the center of Khartoum have been overwhelmed and looted by paramilitary forces. An RSF source verified that its units have “withdrawn from some locations in central Khartoum,” yet emphasized that the conflict remains unresolved, asserting that fierce battles are still ongoing near the airport.

In conclusion, the Sudanese military’s recent advances against the RSF in central Khartoum mark a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. The capture of critical buildings reflects an intensified military effort, although the nation remains divided, with substantial violence persisting in other regions. As the situation evolves, the humanitarian impact continues to escalate, demanding international attention and response.
