Ukrainian and US delegations met in Saudi Arabia to discuss proposals for protecting energy infrastructure amid a diplomatic push to end the Russia-Ukraine war. President Zelenskyy reported constructive discussions, while US envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism about peace efforts. However, the effectiveness of recent ceasefire agreements remains unclear amid continued strikes.

On March 24, 2025, Ukrainian and US officials convened in Saudi Arabia to discuss measures aimed at safeguarding energy facilities and critical infrastructure. This dialogue forms part of a broader diplomatic initiative by US President Donald Trump, seeking an end to the three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Following these discussions, further talks are scheduled for Monday between US and Russian delegations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirmed that his delegation engaged in “a completely constructive manner,” describing the talks as productive. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, leading the Ukrainian team, emphasized the endeavor to “bring a just peace closer and to strengthen security,” albeit with Zelenskyy characterizing the discussions as primarily “technical” in nature.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin tentatively agreed to Trump’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, specifically targeting mutual attacks on energy infrastructure. However, the prospects of this ceasefire appear uncertain, as both Ukraine and Russia continued to report ongoing strikes.

The recent talks between Ukrainian and US delegations in Saudi Arabia signify an important diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite the optimism surrounding the discussions, challenges remain regarding the effectiveness of proposed ceasefire measures. Continued dialogue may hold the key to achieving a resolution and ensuring stability in the region.
