Ebrahim Rasool Returns to South Africa: A Perspective on Diplomatic Ubuntu

Ebrahim Rasool returned to South Africa after being expelled as ambassador to the U.S., citing no regrets. His departure followed critical remarks about Donald Trump, leading to a warm reception from supporters who embraced the philosophy of Ubuntu. Rasool emphasized the importance of dignity in diplomacy and expressed hope for restoring relations without sacrificing South African values.
Ebrahim Rasool, the recently expelled South African ambassador to the United States, arrived back in Cape Town on March 24, 2025, after a lengthy journey through Qatar. He expressed that he returned home “with no regrets,” despite the circumstances that led to his expulsion. Accompanied by his wife, Rosieda, Rasool received a warm welcome from a large crowd of supporters at the airport.
Rasool was declared “persona non grata” by U.S. authorities following his critical comments about President Donald Trump during a webinar held by the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection. Addressing his supporters, he indicated that the label was intended to humiliate him, but he transformed it into a “badge of honour” through the reception he received.
Speaking on the significance of Ubuntu, an African philosophical concept, Rasool expressed pride in returning to a community that values this principle. He emphasized the diplomacy of Ubuntu, characterizing it as speaking the truth gently and engaging intellectually for better relations.
Rasool expressed optimism that President Cyril Ramaphosa would appoint a capable representative to restore U.S.-South Africa relations while maintaining the country’s values. He underscored the importance of balancing dignity with diplomatic efforts, stating, “We must fight for it, but we must keep our dignity.”
When questioned about the success of diplomatic efforts, Rasool remarked that the reactions from the U.S. government indicated his message had reached significant levels. He noted, “They were stunned by our characterization… the diplomacy of Ubuntu has certainly worked because we bore witness to the values of our society.”
Following his expulsion, Rasool, described by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a “race-baiting politician who hates America and its president,” was ordered to depart within 72 hours and deemed unsuitable for future accreditation in Washington. He is expected to provide a detailed report on the situation to President Ramaphosa, who acknowledged the challenge as a minor setback in bilateral relations with the United States.
In summary, Ebrahim Rasool’s return to South Africa was marked by his defiance against his expulsion from the United States, viewing it as an opportunity to showcase South African values. He articulated the philosophy of Ubuntu as central to his diplomatic approach and expressed hope for improved relations under new representation. Overall, Rasool’s experience underscores the complexities of international diplomacy and national pride.
