Israel’s Recognition of New West Bank Settlements Spurs Controversy and Condemnation
Israel has recognized over a dozen new settlements in the West Bank, a decision met with strong condemnation from Palestinian authorities and anti-settlement organizations. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich promoted this as a significant step in Israel’s settlement expansion within disputed territories, drawing attention to ongoing trends of land confiscation and military operations in the region.
The Israeli government has stirred controversy by officially recognizing over a dozen new settlements in the occupied West Bank. This announcement was made by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who described it as a significant advancement for Israeli settlements, separating 13 Jewish settlements from adjacent communities.
Smotrich, a prominent far-right figure, has advocated for the formal annexation of the West Bank. He asserted that the settlements will achieve independent status, coinciding with the approval of numerous housing units across the territory.
In response, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Israeli decision, characterizing it as a blatant disregard for international law and resolution. In total, this move raises the number of settlements considered illegal by most of the international community to 140, now eligible for distinct budgets and self-governance.

The Yesha Council, representing West Bank settlement municipal councils, expressed gratitude to Smotrich for facilitating this decision. Interestingly, EU reports indicate that 2023 has witnessed the highest rate of settlement building permits issued by Israel in three decades.
