As reported by The PUNCH, multiple sources confirmed that numerous petrol tankers have commenced their journey from Nigeria to Niger, which has contributed to a significant drop in fuel prices in the region.
On March 16, 2025, reports indicated that Niger sought assistance from Nigeria amid a fuel shortage, despite prior diplomatic tensions. A military delegation from Niger visited Abuja, leading to an agreement for the dispatch of 300 trucks of petrol to support the nation during the crisis, reinforcing their diplomatic engagement.
A senior Nigerian official emphasized that the delivery of petrol is intended as a “strategic bargaining tool” in dialogue with Niger. This approach aims to ensure Niger receives continued support while fostering a return to engagement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Residents from border towns have witnessed the transport of petrol, which has notably decreased in price from approximately N10,000 per liter to N5,000. Although queues remain, the situation shows signs of improvement. A resident, Faruku Lawali, expressed gratitude towards the Nigerian government for their intervention during this crucial period.
Usman Aliyu, a commercial bus driver, remarked on the strengthened ties between Nigeria and Niger, stating, “blood is actually thicker than water” in reference to Nigeria’s timely assistance. Fuel prices in Niger have decreased to about 2,000 CFA per liter from the previous peak of 10,000 CFA.
The movement of petrol tankers has been confirmed by anonymous security personnel at the Nigeria-Niger border, although the Nigeria Customs Service refrained from commenting due to the diplomatic nature of the situation. They indicated that the transactions occur under specific agreements facilitated by relevant authorities to ensure secure passage.
The easing of the petrol crisis in the Niger Republic is largely attributed to the supply of fuel from Nigeria, marking a significant turnaround in the region’s fuel availability.
