Atrocities Continue in Sudan as RSF Shells Mosque, Leaving Five Dead

At least five people have been killed by RSF shelling in Khartoum during mosque prayers, according to a lawyers’ group. This incident is part of escalating violence following significant military advances by the Sudanese army against the RSF, which has resulted in widespread casualties and displacement across the country.

Recent shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in eastern Khartoum has resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, along with many injuries. This assault, which took place on a mosque during evening tarawih prayers, has been condemned by the Emergency Lawyers network, an organization that monitors abuses by the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). This incident underscores the growing danger to civilians amid ongoing clashes between military factions in Sudan.

This attack represents the second instance of violence against civilians since the RSF experienced significant losses in central Khartoum. A government military offensive successfully reclaimed control of vital areas, including the presidential palace, on the preceding Friday. Additionally, RSF artillery bombardments on Omdurman, a neighboring city to Khartoum, resulted in the deaths of three civilians, showcasing the increasing intensity of the conflict.

The Sudanese army has reported securing the main central bank headquarters from RSF forces, marking further gains in the capital. According to army spokesperson Nabil Abdallah, these military operations eliminated numerous militia members attempting to evade arrest. The RSF, meanwhile, has fortified its position in western regions, threatening to lead Sudan toward de facto partition while establishing its governance structures in the territories under its control.

Since April 2023, escalating conflict has been ongoing between the military, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Burhan’s former deputy. The protracted hostilities have plunged Sudan into a humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of fatalities and over 12 million people displaced from their homes, highlighting the dire consequences of this conflict on the civilian population.
