Ahead of the April 1 election in Peru’s 2nd Ward, incumbent Jason Edgcomb and challenger Tom Riordan discuss the significant issues of establishing a municipal pool and affordable housing. Edgcomb acknowledges the need for a balanced budget amidst city growth, while Riordan emphasizes transparency and the necessity for affordable housing developments.

In preparation for the April 1 election, the municipal pool and affordable housing have emerged as significant topics for 2nd Ward aldermanic candidates, incumbent Jason Edgcomb and challenger Tom Riordan. Notably, this is the only contested aldermanic race in Peru following a successful November referendum that reignited interest in establishing a municipal pool.

During a questionnaire conducted by the Shaw Local News Network, Edgcomb expressed skepticism regarding the allocation of hotel/motel funds for the pool but acknowledged the voters’ wishes. He stated, “However, that was the question on the ballot, and I will honor what the voters asked for. My concern is how this affects city projects down the road, but we will figure that out when we get to it.” In contrast, Riordan emphasized the pool’s necessity and its prior location, mentioning, “The city has gone long enough without a pool… I was born and raised in Peru and used the pool practically every day as a kid. It needs to return.”

Edgcomb highlighted the city’s growth alongside the need to maintain a balanced budget, citing challenges in expanding police and fire services without raising taxes. He remarked, “As the city grows, the need for growth in the police and fire departments grows. We need to find ways to pay for those needs without raising any of the taxes of our constituents.” Riordan, however, raised transparency concerns, criticizing the lack of open communication regarding city developments, saying, “When they tell us something is happening, most of the time it’s never been discussed in the open.”

In discussions around affordable housing, Riordan pointed out the necessity of engaging developers to meet community needs, proposing small duplex developments for families and elderly residents. He stated, “Or possibly to build small duplexes around town in vacant lots for small families/elderly residents.” Edgcomb concurred on the need for affordable housing options and suggested finding local partners to pursue single-family homes that have seen success in neighboring communities.

Both candidates’ responses to the questions can be found in their complete questionnaires available online at shawlocal.com/illinois-valley.

The upcoming election showcases key issues for Peru residents including the construction of a municipal pool and the urgent need for affordable housing. Candidates Jason Edgcomb and Tom Riordan present differing perspectives on financial management, transparency, and community development, ultimately reflecting broader concerns of their constituents. The decision ahead will significantly influence Peru’s developmental trajectory.
