On March 26, 2025, severe flooding due to heavy rainfall in Kampala, Uganda, tragically resulted in the deaths of two children. The Uganda Red Cross Society reported that these children were found deceased in their home, which was overwhelmed by floodwaters in the Mulimira zone, a suburb of Kampala. Concerns regarding additional casualties remain high as the situation develops.

The torrential rains began early in the morning around 5 a.m. local time, leading to flooding across multiple areas, including Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono. This inclement weather has disrupted transportation and halted various business operations within affected regions. Irene Nakasiita, spokesperson for the Uganda Red Cross Society, highlighted the community’s urgent need for support as numerous homes have been inundated and personal belongings have been lost.

Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, reported that numerous roads are now impassable due to the flooding, which has resulted in significant traffic congestion. Kananura advised motorists to exercise extreme caution, urging them not to attempt driving through flooded areas where vehicles risk losing traction and becoming buoyant. He emphasized prioritizing safety and suggested postponing journeys until the floodwaters recede.

The Uganda Meteorological Services has issued warnings regarding intensified rainfall anticipated throughout the current rainy season. This increase in precipitation poses risks of additional flooding, landslides, and lightning occurrences, with the potential to cause further loss of life and property damage across Uganda.

The recent floods in Kampala underscore the dangers associated with extreme weather events, with tragic outcomes including the loss of two young lives. The situation poses significant challenges for the local population, disrupting daily activities and transportation. With forecasts indicating further rainfall, vigilance and adherence to safety measures are paramount for all residents in flood-prone areas.
