World Bank Voices Concerns Over Nigeria’s Statistical Performance

The World Bank has raised alarm regarding Nigeria’s inadequate statistical performance, pointing out that the nation trails behind other aspiring countries such as Mexico, Colombia, South Africa, and Brazil. This observation was highlighted during a visit by a World Bank delegation, which included Country Director Ndiame Diop and Practice Manager Johan Mistiaen, to Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu.

In his presentation titled “Next Level Statistics to Support Nigeria’s Reform and Growth Agenda,” Mr. Johan Mistiaen stated that Nigeria’s statistical system falls short compared to its developmental peers. He emphasized the need for an investment ranging from $10 million to $15 million annually to enhance Nigeria’s statistical framework significantly.

The minister responded positively, affirming the Federal Government’s commitment to upholding the independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). He praised the Bureau for its consistent and reliable data releases, which are critical for reputable international organizations, and assured that the government would not interfere with its operations.

Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, the Statistician-General of Nigeria, underscored that boosting investments in statistics is vital for national development. He appreciated the government’s increase in the NBS’s budget to its highest level in a decade but pointed out that sustained funding and enhanced collaboration with development partners could yield even better outcomes.
