China and Republic of Congo Strengthen Cooperation for African Development

China and the Republic of Congo have pledged to strengthen cooperation and deepen ties in support of Africa’s development, following discussions between President Denis Sassou Nguesso and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brazzaville. Sassou heralded President Xi’s action plans for Africa, while Wang affirmed China’s commitment as a key partner for Congo’s development.

On January 7, 2025, during a meeting in Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of Congo, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation between China and Africa. This dialogue is part of a broader strategy to develop stronger bilateral ties and mutual development goals.

President Sassou expressed his warm welcome to Minister Wang, conveying New Year greetings to President Xi Jinping. He emphasized the significance of President Xi’s initial overseas visit to the Congo in 2013 and highlighted Africa’s rising global influence, hoping that China’s engagement will inspire increased international support for the continent.

Sassou lauded Xi’s ten action plans, introduced during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which address essential areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and industrialization crucial for Congo and its African counterparts. As a co-chair of FOCAC, Congo is committed to implementing these initiatives and further enhancing China-Africa relations.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi’s regards and reiterated China’s unwavering dedication to supporting Africa. Recognizing Congo’s significant progress under Sassou’s leadership, Wang characterized it as an essential partner. He underscored the tradition of China’s foreign minister beginning the year with a visit to Africa, which reflects its solidarity with the continent.

The Minister affirmed China’s readiness to support Congo in its developmental pursuits and initiatives at FOCAC. He expressed China’s willingness to closely collaborate with Congo to realize the outcomes of the Beijing Summit fully, focusing on shared modernization objectives, Africa’s development, and expanding Congo’s role on the international stage.
