On former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday, supporters rallied outside his detention facility in The Hague, celebrating his legacy with a picnic, while critics gathered to demand accountability for his alleged crimes. On the occasion of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday, two opposing gatherings were held outside his detention facility in The Hague. Supporters gathered to celebrate his legacy, while critics emphasized the need for accountability regarding his alleged crimes.
As reported by Mariz Umali from 24 Oras, Duterte’s supporters gathered from various parts of Europe and marched to the International Criminal Court. The attendees organized a picnic and program to commemorate his birthday.
Among the supporters was Marivic Wijtan, a long-term resident of The Hague who celebrated by preparing traditional Filipino foods. She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I prepared traditional Filipino delicacies—rice cakes, puto, dinuguan, and coffee… I really made an effort.”
Notable figures including Senator Robin Padilla and Atty. Harry Roque were present, and Vice President Sara Duterte expressed gratitude to supporters both in the Philippines and in the Netherlands. She said, “Let us also pray to God that President Duterte may return home to the Philippines soon. Our gatherings are a testament to the strength, courage, and conviction of the Filipino people.”
Duterte’s partner, Honeylet Avanceña, made an attempt to visit him but was denied entry for unspecified reasons. His youngest daughter, Kitty Duterte, simply wished her father, “Of course, good health.”
In contrast, critics planned a gathering to call for Duterte’s accountability concerning alleged human rights abuses. Furthermore, in the Philippines, supporters celebrated in Danao City, Cebu, with unity rides and messages on a “freedom wall”. A motorcade commenced at Quirino Grandstand, featuring participants with Philippine flags, green balloons, and placards that read “Bring Him Home” and “We Stand for Duterte.”
The events surrounding Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday in The Hague highlighted the stark divide between passionate supporters celebrating his legacy and critics demanding accountability for alleged injustices. While supporters organized gatherings filled with cultural symbols and hope for his return, critics did not shy away from vocalizing their calls for justice. This duality reflects the ongoing legacy of Duterte’s presidency and its complex impact on the Philippines and its citizens.
