Tensions Rise in South Sudan Amid Arrest of Vice President Riek Machar

South Sudan’s government has accused Vice President Riek Machar of conspiracy, leading to heightened tensions. South Sudan’s ongoing political turmoil has escalated, with the government accusing Vice President Riek Machar of conspiracy. The opposition group, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), has demanded his immediate release, underlining the delicate situation regarding the 2018 peace agreement, which no side wishes to disrupt.

Machar was detained following allegations of his communications with SPLM-IO affiliates since March. Nevertheless, South Sudanese Information Minister Michael Makuei assured that the peace agreement remains intact, stating, “The peace agreement is still in place and will be implemented (…) The peace agreement has not collapsed and will not collapse under any circumstances.”

Peace Minister Stephen Par Kuol emphasized the importance of adhering to the permanence of ceasefire agreements to foster sustainable peace in South Sudan. He urged unity among the signatories of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement and reassured the populace to remain calm and focused on maintaining the peace process.

The SPLM-IO’s spokesperson described Machar’s arrest as potentially leading to civil war, reflecting a serious crisis within the nation’s leadership. However, in a recent statement, the opposition tempered its aggressive stance while reiterating the demand for Machar’s release and for other detained officials connected to the unrest.

The SPLM-IO has further called for international assistance from the African Union and the United Nations to facilitate dialogue aimed at resolving the current crisis. Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has faced significant turmoil, including a devastating civil war from 2013 to 2018 that claimed approximately 400,000 lives, culminating in the precarious peace agreement between the conflicting parties.
