The Parliament of Zimbabwe, represented by Pupurayi Togarepi, the chief whip of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, has proposed a farewell party to honor Kirsty Coventry, the newly elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Coventry, who recently exited her role as Sports Minister, will begin her new position in June following her appointment this month. She has been succeeded by former army commander Anselem Sanyatwe as Minister of Sports.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa celebrated Coventry’s achievement with a party, expressing that her election exemplifies Africa’s potential to lead on a global stage. He stated, “The victory of Honourable Coventry is, thus, not only a source of inspiration and pride for Zimbabwe, but for the SADC region and Africa as a whole… You are not only our national treasure, but a treasure to all young athletes across Africa and the developing world.”

In Parliament, Chief Whip Togarepi praised Coventry’s accomplishments in athletics, emphasizing her ability to elevate Zimbabwe’s reputation during her swimming career at the Olympics. He remarked, “I would want to say to her and her family together with the people of Zimbabwe, we are excited, proud of her achievement and we hope and trust that she is going to hold high the Zimbabwean flag.”

Moreover, Togarepi encouraged the youth, particularly young women, revealing that with dedication to their talents, success is achievable, stating, “the sky is the limit, even beyond.” Fellow legislator Shakespear Hamauswa voiced his anticipation for a celebratory event, suggesting a party to recognize Coventry’s contributions as a former Member of Parliament and government minister. Togarepi affirmed this proposal and called for the Speaker and Clerk of Parliament to coordinate the celebration.

Kirsty Coventry’s election as the president of the IOC has garnered commendation from the Zimbabwean Parliament, highlighting her status as a national and continental icon. The proposal for a farewell party underscores recognition of her achievements and the inspiration she provides, particularly to young athletes and the girl child in Zimbabwe. This event is viewed as a symbol of pride not just for Zimbabwe but for Africa, showcasing the potential for leadership on the global stage.
