The Sudanese Army has successfully regained control of the “Libya Market” in Omdurman for the first time since being seized by the RSF in April 2023. This development is part of the Army’s broader efforts to reclaim various areas in Khartoum, amidst a brutal conflict that has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and millions displaced.

On Saturday, the Sudanese Army successfully retook control of the “Libya Market” in western Omdurman, indicating its ongoing advances in the capital city, Khartoum. This marks the first occasion since the onset of the war in April 2023 that the army has regained this significant site from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Omdurman is one of the three principal cities forming Sudan’s capital. A military source, who wished to remain anonymous, informed Anadolu Agency that the army achieved significant progress during clashes with the RSF at the Libya Market on Saturday morning. The control of the market followed the army’s recent regaining of surrounding neighborhoods.

Sudanese army personnel shared footage on social media depicting their operations within the Libya Market, a notable market in Khartoum. The army’s acquisition of this area, previously a stronghold of the RSF, allows for further expansion into western Omdurman, which remains under RSF control.

These advancements follow the Sudanese Army’s recent announcement of having cleared the last remnants of RSF forces in Khartoum province. This includes securing Khartoum Airport and various neighborhoods for the first time since April 2023.

The conflict between the Sudanese Army and RSF, which has been ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 fatalities and displaced nearly 15 million individuals, according to United Nations and local reports. Other estimates indicate the death toll may reach around 130,000 as per research conducted by American universities.

The RSF has recently faced retreats in several states including Khartoum, Al-Jazeera, White Nile, North Kordofan, Sennar, and Blue Nile. Presently, the RSF’s control extends only to certain pockets in the western and southern areas of Omdurman and parts of North and West Kordofan states. In contrast, the army maintains control over the city of Al-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, marking a pivotal location in the Darfur region.

The retaking of the Libya Market by the Sudanese Army signifies an important milestone in their ongoing efforts to regain control in Khartoum. As the conflict between the army and RSF continues, the humanitarian implications are dire, with substantial loss of life and significant displacement of civilians. With the RSF’s diminished territorial control, the conflict dynamics may continue to evolve in favor of the Sudanese Army.
