Netball Fiji: Leadership Crisis as 15 Associations Demand Changes

Netball Fiji is currently facing significant turmoil as representatives from 15 out of 19 affiliated associations walked out during a special general meeting (SGM) held in Suva over the weekend. The president of Netball Fiji, RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama, expressed her concern regarding this situation and is in search of guidance on how to resolve this deadlock with her leadership team.

Reports indicate that these associations are calling for a change in leadership within Netball Fiji. Sorovaki noted that the motions raised during the SGM were constitutional; however, she had urged representatives to remain so that they could discuss a collaborative way forward instead of departing the meeting.

The SGM was initiated by Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, along with other association leaders. Vosararawa-Sachs emphasized the essential role of the netball associations, stating, “Without us (netball associations) they are nothing.”

A prominent issue raised by the associations during the meeting was the composition of the Fiji Pearls team, which consists exclusively of players from Suva. Vosararawa-Sachs further declared, “We will not be affiliated [with Netball Fiji] under the leadership of RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama and the executives.” Consequently, she mentioned that judicial advice will be sought from World Netball, and the Ministry of Justice will be informed to deregister Netball Fiji if necessary.

The ongoing crisis in Netball Fiji highlights the dissatisfaction of numerous associations with the current leadership. RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama’s presidency is under scrutiny, as significant calls for change have emerged. With judicial advice being sought, the next steps will play a crucial role in determining the future governance and structure of Netball Fiji.
