Sudan’s RSF Chief Declares Ongoing War Against Army Despite Setbacks

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of Sudan’s RSF, has declared that his forces will continue their conflict with the army, vowing to return to Khartoum despite recent setbacks. The national army has gained control over significant areas, while the ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread humanitarian crises in Sudan.

The leader of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, announced that hostilities with the national army are ongoing, despite significant setbacks. Dagalo, known as Hemedti, acknowledged in an audio message on Telegram that the RSF had retreated from Khartoum, making a tactical decision to reposition in the nearby city of Omdurman.

Dagalo asserted that the RSF would return to Khartoum “stronger, more powerful, and victorious.” His remarks follow the army’s recent successes in recapturing substantial areas of the capital, including a prominent market previously utilized by the RSF for launching attacks. The Sudanese armed forces have now gained control over most of Omdurman, which houses critical military installations.

With a focus on securing the entire capital region, including Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri, the army continues its offensive. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has rejected any prospects for reconciliation with the RSF, stating his determination to eradicate the paramilitary group.

The ongoing conflict, rooted in a power struggle preceding a planned civilian governance transition, has devastated Khartoum, displacing over 12 million citizens and creating acute hunger for about half of Sudan’s population. Estimates from a previous study place the death toll at around 61,000 in Khartoum state over the initial 14 months of fighting, indicating the war’s severe humanitarian impact.

The conflict in Sudan continues as RSF leader Hemedti emphasizes resilience despite recent losses. The army, committed to eliminating the RSF, asserts control over critical areas. This power struggle has inflicted tremendous suffering on the civilian population, with widespread displacement and hunger exacerbating the crisis. The situation remains dire as both factions engage in an ongoing struggle for power.
