Shelling by RSF in North Darfur resulted in at least nine deaths and many injuries. Concurrently, RSF attacked nearby El Obeid, killing a child. Sudanese Air Force repelled RSF assaults, while incidents of bombing in refugee camps point to escalating violence. The ongoing conflict since May has led to extensive displacement and destruction in the region.

On Sunday, shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, resulted in the deaths of at least nine civilians and injuries to 17 others, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division (SAF). Further reports indicate that the RSF also attacked El Obeid in North Kordofan, leading to the death of a child and injuries to eight individuals during the Eid El Fitr celebrations.

In response to RSF aggressions, the Sudanese Air Force successfully repelled a ground assault on El Fasher, destroying four military vehicles and killing numerous RSF fighters. Airstrikes also targeted an RSF supply convoy, resulting in the destruction of 12 combat vehicles which prompted a retreat by the paramilitary group.

In a separate incident, five displaced persons sustained serious injuries from a bombing conducted by the SAF on the Shangil Tobaya camp in North Darfur on Saturday evening. The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees has accused the SAF of deliberately targeting homes and infrastructure. Radio Dabanga has yet to obtain a response from the SAF regarding these allegations.

Last week, the SAF carried out airstrikes on a weekly market in the Tora area of North Darfur, close to El Fasher, resulting in numerous casualties, with estimates indicating that hundreds may have died. Maj Gen Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, expressed a commitment to break the RSF siege on El Fasher and stated that “victory was looming on the horizon.”

El Fasher has faced ongoing conflict since May of the previous year, with the RSF imposing a continued siege in an effort to gain control of the last government stronghold in Darfur. This prolonged fighting has led to the displacement of the majority of the city’s inhabitants and significant destruction of essential infrastructure, including hospitals and water supplies.

The recent events in North Darfur have underscored the escalating violence, with the RSF’s actions resulting in casualties among civilians and serious infrastructure damage. The Sudanese Armed Forces have attempted to counter these attacks, and both military responses and their implications highlight a significant humanitarian crisis developing in the region. The conflict continues to have dire consequences for the residents of El Fasher and surrounding areas, with a pressing need for resolution and support for the displaced population.
