South Korea Strengthens Diplomacy by Establishing Ties with Syria

South Korea has established diplomatic relations with Syria, its last UN member state to normalize ties, marking a strategic move amid increasing diplomatic pressure on North Korea. Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul’s visit to Syria solidified this agreement, with both nations discussing future cooperation and support amid ongoing humanitarian challenges.
On Thursday, South Korea officially established diplomatic ties with Syria, thus concluding its normalization process with all United Nations member nations except North Korea. Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul personally visited Syria to finalize the agreement, demonstrating an expansion of South Korea’s diplomatic initiatives and exerting pressure on Syria’s long-time ally, North Korea.
During his visit to Damascus, Foreign Minister Cho met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. They signed a joint statement to formalize diplomatic ties and discussed enhancing bilateral relations. The South Korean Foreign Ministry articulated that this step opens new avenues for cooperation with Syria, whom they had previously distanced due to its alliance with North Korea.
Cho emphasized the significance of Syria’s stability for both Middle Eastern peace and global security. He stated, “Syria’s stability and prosperity are essential not only for peace in the Middle East but also for global peace.” He expressed hopes that the normalization would lead to robust cooperation enhancing Syria’s development and overall regional stability.
The establishment of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Syria represents a strategic move aimed at enhancing South Korea’s influence and fostering regional stability. By pledging humanitarian aid and offering developmental support, South Korea not only aims to assist Syria but also diminishes North Korea’s influence on the international stage. This event reflects a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape and its relationship with global powers.
