Ghana Investigates Reports of Nationals in Russia-Ukraine War

The Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs is investigating reports of 14 Ghanaians allegedly caught in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite difficulties in locating them, the Ministry is committed to ensuring their safety. Additionally, the Ministry is aiding Ghanaians facing deportation from the U.S., focusing on humane reintegration efforts.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Ghana, has stated that the government is investigating reports concerning 14 Ghanaians who are allegedly involved in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. At a media briefing in Accra, he mentioned that the Ghanaian mission in Moscow is facing challenges in locating these individuals, especially in light of a viral video indicating their participation in the conflict.

Minister Ablakwa expressed that the Russian Ambassador to Ghana has claimed no knowledge of the situation, noting that initial investigations reveal that some Ghanaians may have been misled by private recruitment agencies. These agencies allegedly promised lucrative employment opportunities in Russia or Ukraine, not disclosing that individuals could be sent to conflict areas, potentially as mercenaries.

He has called upon the public for assistance, urging anyone with credible information about individuals who may have been misled into joining the war to contact the Ministry. The minister emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and safety of Ghanaians abroad.

Addressing the issue of Ghanaians facing deportation from the United States, Mr. Ablakwa stated that the Ministry is actively working to support their reintegration. He clarified that the Ministry opted not to publicize the deportations for humanitarian reasons, focusing instead on providing assistance upon their arrival and ensuring they reunite with their families.

Currently, there remains no update on the status of these deportations, with Mr. Ablakwa confirming that approximately 160 Ghanaians are still on the US deportation list. He assured that efforts are underway to facilitate the safe return of these individuals to Ghana.
