Call for Solidarity: Defending Burkina Faso Against Imperialist Accusations

The Black Alliance for Peace and U.S. Out of Africa Network urge global support for Burkina Faso amid baseless U.S. accusations against its leader. They emphasize the importance of understanding the ongoing struggle against imperialism and the need to unite to protect the nation’s progress and sovereignty in light of U.S. interference. Collective action is critical to avoid a repeat of past mistakes seen in Libya.
In light of recent escalated tensions, the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) and U.S. Out of Africa Network (USOAN) are urging immediate support for Burkina Faso amidst accusations against its leader, Ibrahim Traoré. U.S. AFRICOM Commander Michael Langley’s claims on April 3, 2025, to the Senate Armed Services Committee suggested that Traoré is misusing national resources in what Langley called an exchange for protection, although he provided no evidence to substantiate this assertion.
The accusations aimed at Traoré echo a familiar imperialist strategy—demonizing leaders to justify external interventions. Ernesto Yeboah, who is both the Commander-In-Chief of the Economic Fighters League of Ghana and a key member of the USOAN, voiced strong objections against the framing of this issue. He argued, “This is not about military vs. civilian rule. This is about imperialism vs. liberation. This is about Africans standing up–finally–and saying: Hands off Africa.”
BAP and USOAN are responding to calls for unity within Africa to defend Burkina Faso. They emphasize the urgent need for all anti-imperialist allies worldwide, particularly Black individuals, to publicly denounce imperialist maneuvers. Citing past failures to contest U.S.-led actions in Libya, they stress the importance of not letting history repeat itself.
Moreover, the groups point to the complicity of silence among organizations like ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Congressional Black Caucus. The current struggle against imperialism is seen as especially critical, with the Alliance of Sahel States emerging as a vital force for Pan-Africanism. This fervor for self-determination in Burkina Faso sets an example that threatens U.S. and NATO interests in the region.
Under Traoré’s guidance, Burkina Faso is forging a path toward food sovereignty and resource empowerment. By establishing a national gold refinery and reclaiming resources for local benefit, they are advancing self-reliance. The vague accusations from AFRICOM are interpreted as attempts to destabilize these positive gains. U.S. language surrounding “strategic interests” is read as code for unrestrained exploitation of Africa’s wealth.
The BAP and USOAN campaign for collective action to safeguard Burkina Faso, advocating for the expulsion of AFRICOM from Africa to prevent the tragic fate that befell Libya in 2011. They insist that the time to mobilize in support of Burkina Faso is now.
The recent aggressive posturing by the U.S. towards Burkina Faso underscores the high stakes involved in the struggle against imperialism in Africa. The longtime mission of the Black Alliance for Peace and U.S. Out of Africa Network seeks to unite anti-imperialist forces—from Africa and beyond—to protect the sovereignty and progress of nations like Burkina Faso. As historical errors loom large in memory, the call to stand in solidarity is not just urgent, but necessary to foster a resilient Pan-African identity and self-determination.
