The man, identified as Isaac Kuria, also known as “Kush,” was reportedly trying to escape to Tanzania when he was captured in Isebania. The police have informed the public that Kuria is believed to be the triggerman in the organized hit on Were. According to various sources, immediately following the incident, Kuria fled the scene, first heading to Mihang’o, where he disposed of the firearm used in the assassination—a pistol that was later recovered by investigators.
Witnesses and investigators reported that Kuria continued his flight through Narok on a motorbike before utilizing public transport to reach Isebania. It appears he had stayed in contact with relatives across the border, setting the stage for a possible escape. Detectives noted they were able to trace his communications with other suspects already in custody, which ultimately led them to Kuria.
“We were monitoring his communications and knew he was trying to leave the country,” remarked a source with knowledge of the ongoing investigations. Kuria was arrested at a lodging in Isebania, along with another individual who is now also detained. The two have since been transported to Nairobi and are slated to appear at the JKIA Law Courts soon.
With Kuria’s arrest, the total number of suspects in custody related to the assassination now stands at eleven. Those already apprehended include Were’s personal bodyguard, Allan Omondi, and his driver, Walter Owino. Another suspect, William Imoli, is believed to have played a crucial role in orchestrating and financing the assassination.
An array of prominent figures is also under scrutiny, including businessman and politician Phillip Aroko and Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng. Allegations suggest they contributed financially to the assassination plot. Additionally, Edwin Oduor and Dennis Manyasi remain in custody, among others.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that they are poring over bank transactions and other communications between suspects to uncover further motives behind this grave incident. Meanwhile, the slain MP, Were, was laid to rest at his rural home in Kachien village, in the Kasipul constituency, on May 9.
