Relations between South Africa and the United States have soured over several issues, including the contentious expropriation of land from White South Africans and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In February, President Trump cut U.S. aid to South Africa, citing concerns about discrimination against White South Africans, often referred to as Afrikaners, under a new land law. Ramaphosa’s office has vehemently denied these claims.
“We are the only country on the continent where the colonizers came to stay and we have never driven them out of our country,” Ramaphosa stated, highlighting the complexities around land ownership and racial inequality in South Africa.
Interestingly, just last week, 59 White South African refugees arrived in the United States on a government-chartered plane, marking a significant entry under the newly prioritized U.S. refugee resettlement initiative spearheaded by Trump. Amidst these developments, Ramaphosa has condemned the Afrikaners’ reluctance to adapt to a new political landscape that favors Black-majority rule, arguing that White land ownership—currently over 70% despite only comprising 7% of the population—continues to perpetuate inequality. Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has expressed its frustrations over South Africa’s claims against Israel, particularly following a genocide case brought forth by the South African government.
Trump has also threatened further aid cuts over allegations that South Africa has allied with Iran for potential nuclear development. Despite these contentious topics, discussions may encompass more positive endeavors, such as business collaborations with Elon Musk concerning Tesla infrastructure and SpaceX facilities. Additionally, both leaders are likely to touch on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a situation South Africa has approached with a stance of neutrality.
